Colleen O'Leary Discusses How Nurses Guide Treatment

By Colleen O'Leary, RN, MSN, AOCNS
PUBLISHED THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 1970

Colleen O’Leary, associate director for nursing education, The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital, discusses the vital role nurses play in guiding the treatment of their patients with cancer.

Since nurses are the people who generally have “a pulse on everything”, says O’Leary, one of their main roles is to advocate for the best practices and best outcomes for the patient. This might involve acting as a liaison between providers, or coordinating services such as nutrition, physical therapy, or social work for their patients.
