Penny Daugherty Discusses How the Affordable Care Act has Impacted Nurse Navigators

Article

Penny Daugherty, RN, MS, OCN, Southeastern Gynecologic Oncology, discusses how the Affordable Care Act has impacted nurse navigators.

Penny Daugherty, RN, MS, OCN, Oncology Nurse Navigator, Gynecologic Oncology, Multiple Myeloma, Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, Atlanta, discusses how the Affordable Care Act has impacted nurse navigators.

Daugherty says some of the patients mistake nurse navigators for navigators designated to help them navigate the Affordable Care Act website. The majority of the patients are experiencing an increase in copays and because of the increase in the cost, many hospitals have to assist patients with their financial burden.

As insurance and plan changes have forced many patients to choose different oncologists, Daugherty says nurses have had to help them get readjusted to a new oncologist.
