Nurse Leaders Incorporate More Kindness Into Their Work to Combat Burnout

Lack of empathy in healthcare environments can be a major contributor to nurse burnout, according to Julie Kennedy Oehlert, DNP, chief experience officer, Vidant Health.

As part of an ambitious plan to transform the culture at Vidant Health and improve the experience of patients and team members alike, Oehlert helped reframe the organization’s goals to consider kindness and compassion as part of strategic excellence. At the Association of Community Cancer Centers 35th National Oncology Conference, Oehlert spoke with Oncology Nursing News® about Vidant’s purposeful cultural shift, and nurses’ roles in leading change.

In this video, Oehlert explains how nurse leaders have begun to intentionally incorporate more kindness and compassion into their work, and how these leaders have seen both their patient experience and their teams' engagement rise.
