Anne Kolenic on End-of-Life Communication Skills Training

Thursday, May 23, 2013
Anne Kolenic, RN, BSN, OCN, University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, Cleveland, Ohio, discusses the importance and implementation of end-of-life communication skills training for the oncology nurses.

At the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, there was a movement towards the importance of outcome-based learning in nursing. Kolenic developed a two-part series for nurses to attend one session with didactic content, case studies, and interactive role playing before a six-week break. During the six-week break in sessions, nurses were required to implement a new skill.

After six weeks, the novice nurses were brought back for feedback. Kolenic says that all of the nurses applied their new skill and had increased confidence. A big finding from the training program was how much the nurses valued hearing stories from experienced nurses.
