Deborah Becker, PhD, ACNP, BC, CCNS, practice associate professor of nursing, Penn Nursing Science, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, discusses managing pain in oncology patients.

Becker says there are a lot of myths that need to be dispelled when it comes to addressing pain in oncology patients. Nurses tend to undertreat pain across all types of disciplines, including oncology.

Most oncology patients will decline taking pain medicine because they are afraid they will become addicted to it or it will impact their quality of life, Becker says. However, it is important for oncology patients to communicate to their nurses and doctors about their pain they are feeling so that the patients can be treated appropriately.
