Smoldering multiple myeloma is an asymptomatic early precursor to multiple myeloma. Current guidelines recommend that patients with smoldering multiple myeloma be monitored, but studies have shown that early treatment can lead to rapid, durable responses, Landgren says.
Landgren adds that patients with high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma should be treated by myeloma specialists and consider enrolling in a clinical trial to delay or potentially prevent the development of multiple myeloma.
