Mark Lazenby, PhD, APRN, FAPOS, associate professor at Yale School of Nursing and incoming president of American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS), discusses psychosocial topics that concern APOS.

Topics that currently concern researchers align well with the accreditation standards of the Commission on Cancer (CoC), Lazenby says, and include survivorship care plans, navigation, and distress screening.

A lot of science has been presented on the outcomes of distress screening, the importance of validated tools with established cut-off scores, and utilizing the screening to identify people with chronic distress.

Another large part of the science is opening communication between patients and providers, which can be done through survivorship care plans.
