Bush says it’s an exciting time for all nurse navigators. However, one of the biggest challenges in this field is how to define the role and core foundation practices of the oncology nurse navigator.

Bush and colleagues have worked together to conduct a role delineation survey. Based on the survey, researchers were able to define core competencies for the oncology nurse navigator. This is available on the ONS website, Bush says.

The reason why role definition has been so challenging is because there are many models and varieties of navigation. Bush believes that the defining core competencies and focusing on the foundational practices will help move the field forward.
