Jamie S. Myers, PhD, RN, AOCN, adjunct assistant professor, University of Kansas School of Nursing, discusses the importance of having survivorship care plans in place for cancer survivors.
Myers says sometimes incomplete information is provided to survivors at the end of their treatment.
Patients should know exactly what their treatment consisted of, Myers says. It is also important for patients to receive adequate information regarding surveillance, recurrence, second malignancies or long-term management of treatment-related sequelae. Myers says patients’ physicians also lack survivorship care knowledge.
With a survivorship care plan, both the patient and the patient’s primary physician will be given information needed for appropriate monitoring.
