Karley Trautman on Decreasing Venous Thromboembolism in Patients with Blood Cancers

Karley Trautman, DNP, ANP-BC, of University of Colorado Hospital, explains how a quality improvement program helped staff to reduce venous thromboembolism (VTE).

For patients with blood cancers, there is a double risk of VTE and bleeding. By reviewing standards and educating staff, this hospital was able to reduce both the rate of VTE and the rate of recurrence of VTE, as well as the rate of bleeding. The staff also raised the amount of patients receiving prophylaxis from 20% of patients to 50%.
