Prostate Cancer Diagnoses Decrease With Lenient Screening Recommendations

After the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against all men being screened for prostate cancer, there was a decrease in the incidence around the nation, according to MaryBeth Freeman, MPH, senior associate scientist at the American Cancer Society.
Freeman also emphasized that the USPSTF updated their guidelines again in 2018 to state that men should have thorough discussions with their healthcare providers about the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening, as it pertains to them individually. This will prevent over-screening in this population, while also ensuring that men who may be at risk for the disease are still getting the appropriate screening and potential diagnosis.
