In the past, Schultz says, oncologists would decide everything related to treatment. Today, nurses are receiving more education regarding supportive care and have taken the lead on research, in some cases.

Often times, an oncologist may not have time for supportive care, Schultz says, so this responsibility falls to an oncology nurse. It is crucial for an oncology nurse to receive the right education, manuals, and guidelines.
