Kim Christen on Creating a Patient-Driven Protocol for the Specialty Pharmacy

By Kim Christen, RN, BSN, OCN
PUBLISHED WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1969

Kim Christen, RN, BSN, OCN, of Kootenai Clinic Cancer Services discusses the process of creating a protocol for the onsite pharmacy at Kootenai that keeps patients at the center.

A multidisciplinary team was gathered, including pharmacists, financial advisers, nurses, and navigators. Using Lean Six Sigma standards, this team established a protocol for the onsite specialty pharmacy. Most important in this process was ensuring that the physicians understood their role in the system, in the first steps of writing the prescriptions for the patients.
