Journalist Katie Couric Opens Up About Cancer

The broadcast journalist discusses how her colleagues rallied together when her husband was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

When Katie Couric's first husband, Jay Monahan, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997, her journalistic instincts took over. She, her friends, and her colleagues spent hours researching the latest treatments and trials and talking to leaders in the field to learn everything they could about the disease, as if they were doing a news story on cancer and wanted to know all the latest information, she said.

"I became so conversant in this new language of cancer," she said.

Even after Monahan passed away, Couric did not leave the cancer space. In fact, she went on to be a co-founder of Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C), and is working with Merck's Your Cancer Game Plan on a new program called "With Love, Me," that features heartfelt letters by survivors and caregivers to their newly diagnosed selves.
