Susan Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior advisor for nursing, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, discusses the benefits of nurse residency programs.

Hassmiller says that nurses do not always get enough clinical practice in nursing school alone. Residency programs allow nurses to continue their education and work in teams. Nurses who graduate from a residency program are also more likely to secure a permanent position, Hassmiller adds.

While the benefits of nurse residency programs are widely known, Hassmiller says, budgetary constraints keep some hospitals from paying for a program.
